The upcoming royal wedding between Britain’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle is set to be the prime social event of the year.
Given the fact that Barack and Michelle Obama have always fancied themselves to be royalty, they assumed that they would be receiving an invite. That’s why it came as bad news to them when they just learned that they likely won’t be invited at all.
Esquire reported that British journalist Duncan Lacrombe, author of Prince Harry: The Inside Story, said that it’s “extremely unlikely” that the Obamas will be invited. He also said that reports that the British government is pleading with Harry not to invite Barack and Michelle are likely true.
Diplomacy is very important,” he explained. “Harry and Meghan will be guided by the Foreign Office’s advice.”
The British government reportedly fears that President Donald Trump will be insulted if the Obamas are invited and he is not. On top of that, the British royal family strives to remain politically neutral. When Prince William married Kate Middleton in 2011, no heads of state were invited.
There were religious leaders, members of the royal family, and commonwealth countries that were invited. I suspect that will be the same blueprint that [Meghan and Harry] will use,” Lacrombe said. “It’s all very carefully orchestrated to make sure that there’s no political overtones.”
Of course, the royal rules will mean nothing to the Obamas, as they have always believed that the rules do not apply to them. Barack and Michelle will undoubtedly be fuming when they realize they will not be allowed to attend a wedding that will be full of the rich and famous.
Though Lacrombe acknowledged that Harry and Markle have made it clear they plan to break some rules with their royal wedding, he doubts they will disobey the British government on this one.
“[Harry and Meghan] are real people and they do want to do their own thing, but I think they’ll also be very conscious of the fact that, from a [public relations] point of view, any major mistakes…you could regret that for a very long time,” he said.
